Christmas Party!!!

THE CHRISTMAS PARTY!

Its that time of year again!

Every year the SFFS holds a successful Christmas gathering for its members, and this year is no exception. Hop on down to Elixir bar in Euston (details below) for a fun night!

This event is a costume party with a costume competition. While we aren’t going to turn you away if you’re out of costume, its great fun and we always have solid prizes!

The event is at a bar, so bring ID, even though they aren’t likely to ever check it (just a legal thing for them)

The event is at a bar and it has a minimum spend, so without sounding like I’m trying to make you spend money, you can’t bring your own booze with you! Drinks are not unreasonably priced, and from 6-8 there is a Happy Hour on all drinks, which they have extended specially for us!

We control the music, so if you would post your requests at this forum thread, we will incorporate them into the nights music, the cheesier and nerdier the better!http ://www . uclsf . org . uk/forum/events-and-shenanigans/christmas-party-music-and-discussion/#p706

It is absolutely fine to bring your friends, whether they are in or out of costume!

For specifics regarding time and place:

Sunday 11th December – We have it at this time as it isn’t right at the end of term, and so the Affiliate students who enjoy our society in the first time can attend.

Elixir Bar in Euston – google map it – Its up Eversholt street, in between Mornington Crescent and Euston Station
No cover for entry and no tickets, just make sure you spend a bit at the bar.

6pm-11pm is the time for the event. So it starts relatively early and it ends relatively early, but we find that a) it means we don’t have to buy tickets or pay cover on entry as thats how booking these places works, and b) its a Sunday. Happy hour from 6pm-8pm, I’m told.

You don’t have to be a member of UCL SFFS to attend.

Any other questions? Email alexflather@gmail.com

Hope to see you all there!!

MC Treasure Hunt

The Minecraft Treasure Hunt

Server IP: 69.25.207.235

(ask to be whitelisted)

Basically, this is a clue-following, world-spanning adventure! Find clues hidden in obscure places across the map, which will point you to the next one. Once you have collected all the clues, you will know where to go to battle your way to the finale!

Prizes

First Place: £15 cash/Warhammer 40K/Fantasy box set of £15 of your choice
Second Place: Full set of Diamond gear/64 blocks of your choice in game

RULES – Very simple, and please bear in mind as the admins, we can see logs + what you have in your inventories. We WILL know if you have cheated! Most of the fun & Challenge is doing it “properly”, so please do!

Start with Iron Armour, Iron Sword+Pickaxe+Shovel, 64 Dirt, 3 bits of food, 15 torches. Ideally do NOT pick up anything else on the way, but you have leeway here as some of the challenges are rather tough!! If you die, we would like you to say you did, and get those resources to continue. We can check the logs to see who has died, but honestly that is such a hassle, and we’d rather trust you guys
You are not allowed to place any blocks while in the Nether sections.
Do not destroy ANY signs or attempt to misdirect fellow players
Survival mode only, no teleportation – Once you’ve started this thing, you have to finish it!
PVP is enabled…
You CAN ask for further clues, but we will note down if you have.

HOW IT WORKS

The beginning is by spawn, in the ruined church, outside the Tutorial crypt. The clues are found by finding signs with 4 letter codes on them (e.g. AO55, BT87)
Once you find a code, and if JC and/or me are NOT ONLINE, Text either JC or myself (JC: 07907674778, Me: 07590607918 – don’t abuse these please :( ), or Email me (alexflather@gmail.com). If “captain_derple” is online, this is JC’s brother – he might be able to get hold of us if you’re struggling
We will then send on the appropriate clue to point you to the next sign, along with a line of text.
At the end of the hunt, you have to have all the lines of text to get the prize. This is to stop sequence breaking, and we know some people have stumbled across a clue or two as we’re setting this up. It won’t do you any good without the clue before it!
First one to submit the final code with all the lines of text is the winner!

Competition starts now guys.

Please post here if you are engaging in this. Remember to have the appropriate equipment, and try not to cheat, please. We’ve spent a while on this!

The adventure should take approx 5-6 hours of gameplay.

Join Fortnight!

Hello all!

Absolutely fantastic turnout to the Film Night and following pub trip. It trickled down to the die hards, and some people ended back at my Presidential Palace (yes OK its a flat but I can call it what I like), it was a solid end to a really good Fresher’s Fortnight!

Now we have to talk money…

To participate in all further Sci Fi Society activities you have to join the society formally, which can be done any time after the 17th of October (Monday). If you are not joined up by Friday the 28th (2 weeks from then), you cannot legally take part in any events (you are simply not insured!). Look us up on the UCLU online shop (http://uclu.org/shop/index.php) or go to the CSC reception desk (Bloomsbury building, 2nd floor). Membership is a few pounds (I do believe £4 off of the top of my head) for the entire year.

Existing members (yes that includes you committee!) have to do this as well. If we do not have 30 paid members by the end of the Fortnight, we get instantly disbanded as a society!

Now that that financial gubbins is out of the way…

1) RPGs – keep an eye on the forums. I am currently in the process of block booking an ungodly number of rooms for RPGs. Email James and get him to tell me what rooms you want when. When the bookings return, I will forward the information on. Please be patient, I can’t hurry the monolithic UCLU bureaucracy and frankly they bloody hate me already for booking about half of UCL

2) Film Nights & Doctor Who Nights – Same time, same place! Film Night is South Wing Garwood LT @ 6pm on Friday (or the Quad at 5.45 if you’re still unsure of how to get there). I do not know what film we are going to watch! If you have any suggestions (Scifi/Fantasy related please!) just email me/bring the DVD along. If I take a fancy to a suggestion I’ll advertise that as what we’re watching, as I’m President and I can, hooray! Dr. Who nights are Drayton B04 @ 6pm on Thursday, and again the Quad at 5.45 if you’re unsure. Bring your DVDs along!

3) Minecraft – Join our Minecraft server. Minecraft is bloody awesome. Details on the cash prize treasure hunt forthcoming!

4) Airsofting – Unfortunately the place we wanted to book can’t handle the amount of people we’re going to bring, and it’d have to be like 6-7 people a side. By the time we have the committee members and stuff, thats like 2 people. So we’re rethinking this, it might have to be in the new year at a different venue. Apologies to all, but sometimes fate works against us!

5) Dr. Who Experience – I just want to gather opinions for this. Please email alexflather@gmail.com with the subject title “Dr. Who Experience” if you’d be interested in going to the Kensington Olympia Dr. Who exhibition, with some discounted tickets for the first-signups. Tickets are £12 base, we might be able to knock that down to £7.

6) Pub Crawl – On Monday 24th (aka Monday week) we are having another pub crawl! Details on this will be forthcoming

7) Board Games are going to be on Wednesday, HOPEFULLY. The room booking has yet to come through, so I’ll update when it does.

And lastly…

8) WARHAMMER. Those of you who were at the Film Night last night may have met John, my Kungfu instructor and a bit of a nerdy chap himself. He has enough Warhammer, new in boxes, to drown a small child should the pile fall over. So I need some able bodied troops to help me retrieve this as he doesn’t want it. Dates and details forthcoming, it’ll be some time next week and he lives in Wembley. This is just a heads up to let you all know that the society is soon to have its cup overflowing with all things Warhammer + 40K related.

Fresher’s Fortnight Week 2 info!

Hello all!

Thanks very much to all who came to yesterday (Tuesday’s) Sci Fi RPG taster. My group did well despite me only having 2 hours to teach and play – vanquishing Orks and Gretchin, commandering a broken Leman Russ and all sorts! From what I could hear, the other groups had fun as well!

This week:

Wednesday 12th October – Board Games night! – Love to Settle in Catan? Monopolise? Take some Risks? (oh god my wordplay is awful) – Come to Foster Court 113 at 6pm to try them out under the expert guidance of our Games Master, James! Also we would welcome suggestions for board games from people.

Thursday 13th October – Dr. Who night! Love a bit of Tennant? Ecclestone? Baker? Smith? Come along! We don’t know what series we’ll be watching, but would welcome as many people as possible to bring their DVDs down, maybe we’ll have a vote! Drayton B04 at 6pm or the Quad at 5:45

Friday 14th October – Film Night! Scott Pilgrim vs. the World! One man, 7 evil ex’s, 1 girl, 1 mission. Not to be missed! Followed by a pub trip to the ULU for £1.50 drinks! – South Garwood LT at 6pm or the Quad at 5:45

I will be present hopefully for the Dr. Who night – other society obligations keep me tied up for the other events, lamentably. However our excellent games master James and Events Manager Mark will be there for them! I’ll also be present for the Friday pub trip, never fear! (Mainly b/c I love beer.)

In other news, next week on Tuesday at 7pm there will be a DM Masterclass for those who want to learn how to run a DnD session but fear they don’t quite know how. Owing to me being a special young man who can’t quite manage a calendar, we don’t appear to have a room for this (but we do for the Tuesday after hurrr durrrr), but unless for some reason we are literally deluged in DMs and GMs clamouring to run games (NB: I would quite like this) we can basically meet anywhere to discuss this kind of thing. If you’re interested in this, please email alexflather@gmail.com so I can get an idea of numbers.

Additionally: if you want to run or play in a game this year, please contact me or James (james.coughtrey.10@ucl.ac.uk) to book a room for you, and keep an eagle eye on the forum for new games opening up!

Lastly, the Airsofting negotiations are progressing, we’re currently doing an email game with the centre to book it out for a day.

Oh… did I mention we’re planning a MINECRAFT TREASURE HUNT/RIDDLE GAME FOR CASH PRIZES?
yeah thats right you should be playing Minecraft, look on the forums.

MINECRAFT!

Described as worse than crack, more like the means to make and produce high quality crack. Its Minecraft!

Insanely popular, insanely simple, insanely addicting.

UCL has its own server! It used to be a personal one for the President and some of his friends, but it makes more sense to open it up to the society public.

SERVER ADDRESS: 69.25.207.235
Name: “The UCL SFFS Server”
Seed (for those interested): “Little Fluffy Clouds”
Forum thread to post your username for server access: http://www.uclsf.org.uk/forum/other/minecraft/#p18

ADMINISTRATORS: “LordTwisted”, “kallesh_kallesh”, “JC_92″, “Padypwn”

Type “/help” for server commands!

The rules are simple: Basically don’t grief, don’t steal, don’t build inside reserved space (clearly outlined with torches or walls). Basically treat others as you would have them treat you! Its a friendly game!

Creative mode can be “unlocked” by building something cool, as decided by the Admins.

Don’t know what Minecraft is? Its a game of discovery, combat, building and surviving. Delving into a hidden ravine, fighting a skeleton off of a cliff, building a beautiful house out of wood and decorating it as your personal haven. Erecting a fortification that will stand the test of time and dying miles beneath the earth. You can even venture into Hell, if you’re brave enough…

Don’t know what the hell is going on? http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki will help!

Welcome to all – both old members and new! We have events!

Hello all! At the time of writing this post the Fresher’s Fayre is tomorrow, but I assume most people will read this after that fine event.

This is the UCL SFFS website, forum and chat. The Forum is used primarily to post announcements and get feedback on things, as well as marvel over witticisms from DMs and players in the RPG subforums.

In terms of some upcoming events…

Monday 3rd October – PUB CRAWL! Meet in the Quad at 8pm, we’ll go to 1-2 bars and you can get to know members and get to know what the society is about. Look out for the bunch of geeky chaps and chapettes wearing UCL SFFS hoodies, and we should have a sign or something.

Tuesday 4th October – RPG FANTASY TASTER! Foster Court 121 at 6pm or the Quad at 5.45 (try to be prompt!) – experience a brief session of a number of Fantasy based  (Dungeons & Dragons, Ironjaw, Eclipse Phase, etc) and get to know what this kind of gaming is all about!

Tuesday 11th October – RPG SCI-FI TASTER! Foster Court 121 at 6pm or the Quad at 5.45 (try to be prompt!) – experience a brief session of a number of Sci-Fi based RPGs (Dark Heresy, Paranoia, etc) and get to know what this kind of gaming is all about!

Wednesday 12th October – BOARD GAMES TASTER! Foster Court 121 at 6pm or the Quad at 5.45 (try to be prompt!). Come experience a whole variety of themed and competitive-fervour inducing board games!

Friday 14th October – FILM NIGHT! – South Garwood Lecture Theatre, starts at 6pm (again, 5.45 in the Quad). Scott Pilgrim vs the World, with a post-film trip to the ULU for £1.50 drinks and a night of fun!

Hopefully we’ll see a lot of you at these events, in the past they have proved popular!

Yours,

Alex (President 2011-2012)
